acquires used book site AbeBooks

Bookseller giant is acquiring Canada-based second-hand book site AbeBooks, which will continue to function as a stand-alone operation. Neither company revealed any financial details.

AbeBooks is one of the world’s leading second-hand book sites, claiming to have more than 110m users, rare and out-of-print books for sale. It launched in 1996, later branching into the German, French and UK markets through the acquisition of German site JustBooks. In 2004, the company acquired Spanish company IberLibro.

The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, and is expected to close before the end of Q4 2008.
