Doug Field, former CTO of electric scooter firm Segway, has been hired as VP of product design at Apple.
Field headed the design team at Segway since its inception in 2001. The company announced his move on its blog last week.
“Doug has been the driving force in making the Segway what it is today and will be sorely missed at the company,” the post said. “However, with every change comes good and bad. So while it’s bad the rich history and experience of Doug is leaving, it’s good in that perhaps the team will get a fresh perspective into possible engineering solutions for future versions of the Segway, or Segway-like applications.”
Although Apple has not given any further details on the exact nature of Field’s role, some commentators have expressed surprise at his appointment. The Guardian’s Bobby Johnson says he would like to file the story under “WTF?”, while InformationWeek says the Segway scooter has never earned the “cool” factor associated with Apple products.
According to Forbes, Segway only sold 30,000 electric scooters between 2001 and 2007, far fewer than the 100,000 the company had originally hoped for.
