Burns joins Bebo having also served at Google, ad network DoubleClick and search site AltaVista. Joining Google in 2001, she became the search giant’s first UK-based MD, overseeing operations in the UK, Ireland, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
Burns leaves DailyMotion, having worked at the French video site as UK MD for just four months. Burns will be responsible for Bebo’s roll out in Italy, Germany, Spain, France and the Netherlands in the next quarter, as well as for its current operations in the UK, Ireland and Poland. The move comes after the recent promotion of Bebo’s Joanna Shields to president of AOL’s People Networks.
Before leaving Google for DailyMotion earlier this year, Burns had worked with Shields, who was Google’s MD for strategic partnerships in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Shields left her post in January to join Bebo, where she helped broker the AOL takeover and now serves as CEO.
AOL acquired Bebo in March for USD850m, ending months of speculation about a possible buyout of the teen-focused network. At the time, AOL said Bebo will form the cornerstone of its online ad and media strategy, moving to integrate Bebo’s platform with AOL’s AIM and ICQ messaging services.
Burns will take up her role at Bebo on August 4.
