North American spending on search ads totalled USD12.2bn last year, from USD9.4bn in 2006, according to a survey by the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organisation (SEMPO). The figure exceeds SEMPO’s previous projections of USD11.5bn search ad spending for 2007. SEMPO expects the growth trend to continue, with spending hitting USD25.2bn by 2011. This is also up from its past estimate of USD18.6bn spending by 2011. Marketers are expected to increasingly spend on search advertising funds previously used for other forms of marketing, such as print magazine ads, direct mail and website development, SEMPO says.
